2A: CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT OF RESPECT & RAPPORT

Within the classroom environment, I work to establish a supportive community through aspects of my instruction. Dance is an art form that encourages and celebrates community, therefore I work to implement community- based ideas within technical and creative work to achieve mutual respect and rapport amongst the students and myself. The video below, "BOuND," was created during the early stages of the COVID- 19 pandemic in lieu of my students' spring showcase. Over the Zoom virtual platform, my students and I collaborated to choreograph a dance inspired by the support we provided one another, as well as the bond we all developed during that time.

As an educator, I place significance in open- mindedness and curiosity within students, and I work to encourage both within the classroom environment. Considering the complexities of dance education, I believe that there is always something new to discover. During my instruction, I call on students to share their discoveries and curiosities with eachother, for I feel that there is so much that peers and myself can learn from one another. The image below displays an example of students' discoveries and takeaways from their first ever site- specific dance class.

While addressing classroom procedures and student behavior, I believe it is most effective to collaboratively establish classroom norms with the students. Through this collaboration, I feel that the students and I can determine the best possible expectations for the classroom environment and understand one another much better. I honor the large role students play within the classroom, therefore I find that working with the students to establish procedures and behaviors not only helps in managing the classroom, but also assists in the development of mutual respect. Attached below is a sample classroom management plan that I developed for my students, as well as some memes I designed to address classroom expectations in a fun way.
