Within this unit, sophomores and juniors in high school utilized choreographic parameters to collaboratively choreograph dances inspired by their perspectives on global issues. During these lessons, students created work inspired by current events such as the Black Lives Matter movement, the COVID- 19 pandemic, and gender inequality. Throughout these three lessons, students used steps and strategies from Larry Lavender's ORDER Critical Evaluation model to evaluate and revise choreography. As the lessons progressed, students practiced evaluating their own work, as well as evaluating their peers' work, to further enhance artistic and evaluation skills.
This unit calls upon students in grades K- 2 to jump into their "Personal Portals" to express their identity through the exploration of emotions within hip- hop steps and choreographed movement. In each lesson, students will investigate how they can express emotions through the dynamic qualities of hip- hop steps, discovering how they can later use these qualities while creating their own movement. In creating their own movement, students will also consider how they can express themselves as they reflect upon personal experiences and emotions to influence dynamic qualities in their choreographed movements. Throughout the unit, students will be encouraged to draw, explore, share, and create.
