3A: COMMUNICATING WITH STUDENTS

Expectations for Learning- Directions and Procedures- Explanations of Content- Use of Oral and Written Language

To engage in effective teaching, it is important to me that I maintain an open line of communication with students throughout lessons. Through various formal and informal assessment strategies, I can ultimately determine whether or not my students are understanding content from a lesson. During lessons, I work to the best of my ability to encourage students to ask questions either written or verbally; if necessary, I also encourage students to contact me via email if extra assistance is needed. During my clinical experience in the COVID- 19 pandemic, I utilized both written and verbal approaches throughout instruction to ensure students' comprehension of directions and information. Attached below is a sample presentation I used for a lesson during my clinical experience. The purpose for its development was to provide visual aids for students in addition to verbal instruction.

3C: ENGAGING STUDENTS IN LEARNING

Quality of Questions- Discussion Techniques- Student Participation- Activities and Assignments- Student Groups- Instructional Materials and Resources- Structure and Pacing

Within my instruction, I strategically prepare questions and ideas that will assist students in learning while maintaining their engagement. Furthermore, I find it important to incorporate discussion- based collaborative activities that allow for students to work with and learn from one another. In honoring students' roles within the classroom, I believe that they have the power to achieve success on their own if given the appropriate tools. That being said, I work to utilize discussion- based techniques and collaborative activities that provide students the opportunity to learn independently. Through this approach, students are more likely to engage as they will be working as active participants in their learning experience. The documents below were developed based on concepts within Larry Lavender's ORDER approach to critical evaluation. The Guiding Questions sheet served as a resource for students in which it was used as a tool during collaborative discussions with peers. Similarly, the ORDER Critical Evaluation worksheet provided students with prompts to assist in their independent evaluation responses.

3D: USING ASSESSMENT IN INSTRUCTION

Assessment Criteria- Monitoring of Student Learning- Feedback to Students- Student Self Assessment and Monitoring

To effectively monitor students' learning, I utilize various assessment strategies within instruction to determine students' progression and/ or misconceptions. During instruction, I work to use both informal and formal assessments so that I can communicate with students verbally while also obtaining documents that demonstrate individual learning. Throughout lessons, I tend to follow up new information with some form of an assessment to inform my teaching. These assessments ultimately let me know what information needs more exploring and when it is appropriate to move onto the next steps. Attached below is a presentation I designed for a lesson regarding expression in dance. Throughout the presentation I incorporated many assessments that helped inform my teaching while also encouraging students to be active participants in their learning experience.
